My Story

A few days ago I learnt that a good friend, a good man who I worked alongside and socialised with, died suddenly. I'll call him Jonathon. I had spoken to him a month or so ago, and we had agreed to arrange a motorbike riding experience for his grand-daughter (I'm a motorbike instructor). He died from pancreatic cancer, something you can find out more information about on the Men's Health Trust NZ website. It was 9 days from diagnosis to death, and I didn't get to see him before he passed away. He had remarried earlier this year (2016). Jonathon is one of several of my significant, important, male friends and family members who have either passed away or who are now living with a significant disability that seriously affects their quality of life.

I've run the Auckland full marathon 3 times before, and I swore I would not run it again. It's hard. Your body is really pounded by the end. It seriously hurts.

But I wanted to find something positive I could do to raise awareness about men's health for a few years. And the timing of these recent events seems to have steered me towards one more marathon preparation schedule. Its not an easy thing to contemplate, because I know what is ahead.

I've created this page because I want to make a difference. I'm inspired by the work of Men's Health Trust NZ and wanted to support them by raising money as part of my participation in 2016 ASB Auckland Marathon.

Please help me help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about Men's Health Trust NZ , the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity - it will mean a lot to see the funds that I raise increase day by day.

My thoughts are that if just one guy, or the partner of one guy (because lets face it, it's usually partners that push a guy to get themselves checked out) gets a potentially serious illness or condition diagnosed and where possible, treated earlier, then that will be worth all the sweat and gritty determination I'm going to be drawing on to complete the marathon.
